Travel Writing
Creative Writing for Beginners
Substitute Teacher, Chatham University Jan 2007 through 2009
Supported professors by continuing their mission of excellence in the classroom; designed lesson plans based on specific classes; interviewed writers and recorded them reading selected pieces to further enhance student connection with and understanding of author and style of writing. Assigned writing prompts for classroom and home. Prepared students for upcoming reading or lecture of visiting poet. Professor noted student retention of materials (based on quiz results from the following classes) to be some of the highest of the semesters.
Guest Lecturer, University of Pittsburgh Dec 2009
Instructed students on importance of research in creative writing. Used examples of own work to show integration of personal experience and enriching information. Taught students special techniques for researching and for proper balance of researched information and personal experience. According to professor, lesson boosted 98% of students’ final papers up at least a half grade.
Substitute Teacher, Guest Lecturer, Hull Middle School Dec 2000 through Dec 2003
Created lesson plans for lectures and classes. Maintained an engaging environment for creativity and enthusiastic structured learning. Introduced students to poetry through Slam Poetry, including audible samples of slam poets and of hip hop artists who started their careers as poets. Prompted students to write their own poetry, working either as individuals or in groups, which they performed in class. Teacher noted student interest in poetry to significantly increase each year after series of lectures, including many “troubled” students to volunteer in class for the first time ever.
Miscellaneous Teaching Experience
I have also taught bicycle mechanic classes, mostly to women. I have worked as a camp counselor for at-risk youths, have organized and coached a youth street hockey league in my community in Boston, have worked as a resident advisor and as a peer leader, going to public school classrooms to work as an educator for issues not commonly dealt with in the class environment.
